::FAMILY:: Christmas Dinner

There's nothing more I treasure than family time, so once in a while we have the family over for a meal at our place. Christmas dinner this time round was a 5 (+2)-courser mix of east and west ;p

Readily available from our freezer - junk food to hold off hunger pangs

Extra mashed potato from shepherd's pie

Spicy tuna wontan

Kong ba bao in Korean sauce

The Sherpherd's Pie

Salted egg yolk French beans

Scallops with shitake and spinach in cream sauce

I must say my dad was pretty impressed with the spread he asked where I picked up my culinary skills from?! It's not from motherhood, dad, it's a natural talent not displayed when I was staying with you and the kitchen belonged to mummy ;p

::SAN FRANCISCO:: Gastronomical Pleasures

This was how we celebrated MY OWN Mother's Day last Sunday. Sans D. Because he was kidnapped by the gramps for the weekend ;p

Since I still have not gotten over the very much-missed Umami burger from SF, and haven't gotten over the fact that I missed it entirely in LA (I should have googled!!!), and am still living life in regrets for not eating another one of those burgers before I came home... :(

N & I went hunting for the apparently burgasmic burger in Singapore. I had so much high hopes about finding my local burger fix when I saw 2 FB posts about the burger on the same day!

We travelled 20 minutes just to share one burger because we went straight after brekkie.
And sad to say, I didn't quite find my fix.
I know it's unfair to him, but..

This was what he was up against:
The Umami Burger!!!

Check out that thick, succulent and juicy patty!!!

Sigh...
Someone bring the burger into Singapore please?

::CALIFORNIA:: The French Laundry

Rated #10 out of the 11 toughest reservations in the world, Eater.com teaches you how to secure a seat in this place - you can book up to 2 months in advance, which gives you an opportunity to put yourself on the waitlist.

Or, you could pull some strings.
We were lucky enough to be able to get a table for lunch during our San Frans trip.
Something to tick off our bucket list! :D

Introducing: The French Laundry

Dress code has to be strictly followed - Gentlemen to be decked in suits and ladies in dresses/pantsuits. And the waitress makes no attempt to assess you from head to toe discreetly.

Here's da man looking smart in his suit with the menu.

The staffs are trained to describe each dish, specific to the origin of each ingredient and the different levels of sensation they bring to the taste buds. Here, every onion and every parsley are no longer just.condiments. There were special mentions of these in the description.

We were left pretty speechless.
Here's the 9 course chef menu for the day.
....topped with an onion grilled to perfection...

Coastal Settlement

The July Babies get together at Coastal Settlement.

Brownie is definitely to-die-for

N&I later on had some first hand experience dining with 4-month-old parents and we learned to appreciate eating our dinner in peace while said parents took turns snuggling a fussing kiddo and eating with one hand.

Like what the 'adults' say - Enjoy your FREEDOM!
But I am sure the fuss s going to be just as awesome! Right?

Cultural Differences

Japanese delicacies - Singaporeans' Fear Factor
Of the 10 restaurants that we patronised during Part II of the honeymoon trip, 8 had menus that looked like this. So every meal, N & I did it omakase style but at a much lower price than the real deal ;p

The dining table was where the real cross cultural orientation began for us. It wasnt only about the general politeness of the whole country, the orderly lines at the platforms, the longer steps we need to take at the metro, the Blue Lable or the Samantha Thavasa(both of which I got ;p), the bai se lian ren (which we bought plenty from both Hokkaido and Nagano), the everybody strips naked at the Onsen and you only have a tiny towel to cover the most important part (which we also went).

Because food wise, we didnt just stop at the Sashimis. And that alone makes all the other oft-hyped about observations of a Japan trip seem less wow-y.

If anyone asks me about our Japan trip, I probably would be sharing our food adventures instead of telling them how we had lol-ed at the squashed faces pinned flat against metro glass doors during the morning rush hour although the next train was going to arrive in another (just) 2 minutes. Funny truth about how our friend's official working starts at 930am but he usually arrives in office at 830am, while it is the other way round for Singaporeans ;p yet he would be the one rushing to get into THAT train and I am the one who would wait for the next!

So back to our little food adventure...it was very exotic as I mentioned earlier. If there is an equivalent of a fear factor for Singaporeans, I am very sure we would have made half the mark with the stuffs that we had. In no order of yucky preferences and bearing in mind a language difference that didnt allow us to find the exact translation of the more profound delicacy names:

1) Horse Sashimi!! We were served horse intestines too but couldnt make ourselves eat the intestines
2) Grasshoppers
3) Bee babies
4) Silkworm
5) An anonymous worm found under the rock in the river
6) Some crab's internal part. This was served with cottage cheese and actually tasted quite oiishi! And since we didnt know which part of the crab they were exactly talking about, we ate this with less caution. ;p

LASTLY, this is the MOST EXCITING!!!!!
Swallow or spit out your food first!

We BOTH
SWALLOWED SEMEN!!!!
No, dont judge us yet...we were coerced into it..
.

That semen was actually a delicacy!
We had milt!
Milt is the seminal fluid of fish, mollusks, and certain other water-dwelling animals who reproduce by spraying this fluid, which contains the sperm, onto roe (fish eggs). It is actually super yums (milky and soft) if you dont think about the actual organ that you are eating.

So there I said it. Arent they more exciting than the usual stuffs people share with you about their Japan trip?

And so we have lugged back one of the delicacies for gatecrash at The Next Wedding! ;) That's the result of cross-cultural exchange by exposing the Jap friends to our very own gatecrash 2 weeks ago! ;) This time round, they have better ideas what to get for the typical suan, tian, ku, la! ;p Lucky I am on close terms with BOTH bride and groom!

Globalisation brings the world closer, and I cant agree more! Atsu was in town over the weekend and so we brought him along for our multiple errandsssss and to one of our fave bah kut teh stalls across the causeway for some super noms!

Shun Fa Bah Kut Teh
Peppery soup base with toppings of your choice! We had taukee (beancurd skin) and enoki mushroom!
Sesame oil chicken served bubbling hot! The sauce makes plain white rice super yummy!
Pig's trotters
And the must-have side dishes for Bah Kut Teh!

Paradise Dynasty

He has since upped mannnnny levels in spice tolerance and is ALL READY to take on the spicy challenge for The Big Day! :D

Mid November updates

Lack of a better title for this somewhat random post I drafted while meddling around with my new toys while N was out at work for a bit and Mur was snoozing right beside me...

Meet ROOMBA!
We put Roomba to work early on Sat morning ;p
tt's him getting some sun in on the balcony :) he sort of fell right down and couldn't get back in, so our balcony's spick and span now that he had run several times over and over and over until N decided to rescue him back into the house...

The inspiration + the Bahamas diving video with the dolphins
It's hard to let the semi-pro remain a land camera when you see pictures like this!

Also meet Murphy at his new house!
We have been bringing him over for sleepovers for a few weekends now. He is getting better-adjusted to the new environment.
That's him chilling by himself last night ;)
A picture with him before N&I headed out for brekkie.

Easterners converts-to-be
1st rule: Must know where to get food!
(and learn to bring 2-day-old glass bottles to the recycling bin!)

Bedok Interchange
for the famous Chwee Kuey!! :) But that can only be the appetizer ;)

So that was actually quite random and so I couldn't think of a better title...

5 Nov - The Amazing Race

To sorta make up for being grounded in SG over the Hari Raya weekend whilst the rest headed up Melaka for a makan trip, we participated in an amazing race last sat ;p Wedding makes you grounded. I wonder if marriage does the same ;p

We were No. 18!
Playmate and I wheeling to the first destination on an empty stomach ;)
We were given puzzles to solve and multi-portions of brekkiesss to stomach during the race!

The puzzles were easy! But having to stomach 2 chicken rice, 2 huge currypuffs, 1 nasi lemak and 2 meesiam within the morning was............actually MANAGEABLE! *burps*
But we were supposed to be on a wedding diet! *guilty* Some pictorial evidence of my favorites and new makan place on my bookmarks ;)

In other Homey news, we have a new addition to the family

September Updates

A month of EAT. GROOM. LAUGH. LOVE
EAT - Many recurring visits of the same ole faves within the month!
The main reason why Ah Loy Thai gets my vote instead of Ah Roy Thai - The price. Expensive lesson learnt from a series of miscommunication involving the 2 like-sounding restaurants :p It's easy to pass off as a lisp issue ;p
Sze Chuan. Spiced up to the max.
Japanese. Sashimi overload. Finally tasted an Urchin! My diving life has meaning once more - look out for urchins!!! Oiiiiiishiiii
1-for-1 treats from Mackers
Cooked a plate of broccolis. No urge to play in the kitchen this month.
Tried an NZ red. Very thin.
GROOM - OMFG! Canot get any auntier! O's fault. Whoever marries him next time is going to be a lucky girl!
Groomed professionally. With a professional blade, that is! ;p Price of clipper plus the WHOPPING USD70 of shipping fee still gave me a better deal than Singapore's retail!
LAUGH - nothing better than some cheesy jokes that allows u to leave the brain at home :)
LOVE - Home is finally almost done!!
We were home-quarantined from 930am on Sat while sofa/courts/OM/curtain man/KDK man/Philip TV installer/Samsung TV installer arrived at their respective slots to fix up our place. There were even slots for some pre-reno checkout for our friends. The last group left at 6-ish but a last minute decision to pop by from the Aunt, parents and cuzzie held us till 10pm that night. <3
